Heinz von Foerster Congress 2009

with one comment

November 2009 in Wien statt. Genauere Infos gibt’s am Institut für Zeitgeschichte, Uni Wien.

Nachtrag vom 28.7., 10:53 Uhr: Hier nun das vollständige Programm:

Ladies and Gentlemen,
dear friends and colleagues,

The Heinz von Foerster Society, together with the Wiener Institute for Social
Science Documentation and Methodology (WISDOM), the Department of
Contemporary History and the American Society for Cybernetics (ASC),
organizes the Fourth International Heinz von Foerster Conference which will
take place from November 12 to November 14, 2009 at the University of
Vienna. This year, the conference will have „Learning“ as its leading theme
and will pursue a series of very ambitious goals.

*   Learning, together with memory and perception, stood at the center of
Heinz von Foerster´s holistic theory of cognition. Thus, Heinz von
Foerster´s work on learning and cognition at the Biological Computer
Laboratory (BCL) constitutes the first domain for this year´s conference.
*   Additionally, Heinz von Foerster conducted several experiments on
learning and was very much occupied with the organizational aspects of
learning in higher education. Both these experiments and Foerster´s
unconventional ways of teaching will be discussed at length in this year´s
conference.
*   Ernst von Glasersfeld, who will take part in this year´s conference, too,
created the foundations for a paradigm change towards a constructivist
science of education. Thus, current discussions and future challenges
within a constructivist science of education will become another
important focus of the conference.
*   Humberto R. Maturana, who has been invited to the conference as well,
has developed a comprehensive theory of living systems which will
become another important domain of this year´s conference.
*   Moreover, for decades bio-cybernetics was focused intensively on
processes of machine learning. In the last two years the literary remains
of the late Gordon Pask, one of the pioneers in computer assisted
learning, has been transferred to Vienna. As a consequence, past and
current approaches in machine learning will form another thematic
domain for this year´s conference.
*   Finally, the experimental and theoretical work of Jean Piaget and the
relevance and impact of his school for a constructivist epistemology and
science of education as well will become another focus for this year´s
conference.

We are asking for contributions. Please send proposals (abstracts about half
a page) to the conference’s mail address

hvf09.zeitgeschichte@univie.ac.at

by end of June 2009. Proposals will be reviewed by an international
committee. A final conference program will ready on 1.8.2009.

A conference website will be available then, too

www.univie.ac.at/hvfcongress

The conference will be accessible free of charge and will offer, once again, a
framework for further discussions, contacts and network building.
Registration is required.
Currently, the conference is sponsored by the Austrian ministry of Science
and the City of Vienna.

Kind regards,
Albert Mueller
Karl H. Mueller
